    Hi Yah'l,
I have 9 files in my AVG vault, some dating back to 05. What do I do with them? Do I delete then and, if so, will they be a danger out of the vault? I would appreciate any views on this. Thanks

    Howdy Maryanjo,

The AVG Virus Vault displays files that have been "found to be" infected and subsequently places these files in the Vault. This "Vault" is considered to be a safer environment for the management of "suspect" or actually infected objects detected during AVG Free Edition scanning.

When the AVG program first moves the file to the AVG Virus Vault the file (or multiple files) are then deleted from their original location, they are coded, and then saved in a non-executable file in a hidden folder. Consequently, your PC is no longer considered to be infected.

The reason that the files are placed in the vault "first" is that the "suspect" virus might not actually BE a virus. If this is the case, and the "quarantined" infected object is a "false positive" - this could inadvertently could cause "legitimate" (meaning not really infected) programs not to run at all - or perhaps not to run correctly.

This Vault storage method is much safer than "immediately deleting" such suspected files because AV software is not perfect and can sometimes accidentally detect files as "infected" when they are actually no threat at all, but may simply resemble infected files. Therefore, having the files which were deleted safely "still in the vault" gives users a chance to "restore" these quarantined items (or delete them later, as well); after the user determines that it is safe to do so.

However, since you say these AVG Virus Vault files stored on your computer; go back to 2005 and you've apparently had no application problems; they are probably safe to be removed. This AVG webpage offers suggestions as to what to do with the files stored in the AVG Virus Vault.

Side Note: The following AVG webpage gives a fairly good "overview" of the AVG Vault.

    Good Luck!

Well I decided to bite the bullet and wipe them. I'm not sure if wiping them is the same as deleting them. I hope so. If it is'nt please respond immediately.

    Wiping them with what program?

It's pretty much the same thing, you could just delete them but you're OK.

Apparently 'wiping' is the term used by AVG for deleting. They didn't end up in my trash so I presume they were vaporized in some way.

These are the options I get with AVG

    Empty Vault
    Heal Files
    Delete Files
    Restore files

I don't see anything about wiping them, this is why I asked.

I presume they were vaporized in some way.

Well they were probably over-written with useless data, again, not an option with AVG.

I got thinking, and if there is a file in the vault and you click on it, the wipe option might come up, but I think I'll pass on loading up the vault to see if it's there. :D
