    Hi there!

The other day I upgraded Iolo's System Mechanic which now includes PANDA antivirus.
Before uninstalling AVG which has been just great over the past few years, I wrote to PANDA a few days ago to ask them to let me know what would make their product more effective. Still no answer.
Anyone have an idea which is better and why ?

    I prefer Panda.

7 day a week automatic updating.

    But use what you prefer.

Have patience with those guys at Panda they take their time responding to you. I never did get a live person even though they claim to have live support. in the end (2 weeks later) they emailed me back with what I needed.

Even though their customer service needs improvement I am happy with them. They do keep on top of updating your virus definitions everyday ;)

    Support

    Gosh, Panda's support is ...
    slow like so many others.

But my question is what makes the difference between AVG & PANDA ?
    Both offer full coverage.
    Although perhaps like Adrynalyne said,
    Panda offers 24 hour updates.
From experience though, AVG offers updates whenever needed. Usually every 3 to 5 days.

If you think viruses only come out 3-5 days, or on holidays, then you might wanna rethink that.

Updating every day means you dont end up with a new virus because your AV couldn't detect it.

    It has happened to me.

I was infected with backdoor.lala the day it was discovered. I had the most update definitions from Norton and it could never detect it or clean it.

But, sounds like you already sold youself on AVG.

Might want to look at some detection rates for AVG vs. others. I've read some not so great reviews on detection rate. Maybe because it only updates as "needed"

But use what you prefer, which I have said before.

AVG is free which makes you wonder what is the purpose or intentions of doing so????

I rather pay for the service it just tells me that there is more motivation to ge the job done right. Panda has yet to fail me.

Everyday updating now thats something I like and can count on with panda.

The virus of today are very vicious and nasty. I sure do not wish to wait 3 or 5 days before I find out I got one of those.

most free versions are older engines compared to the companies newest product and they typically don't support network drives..

Now I undestand why they are free.

    Thanks for the information.

But does that mean a decline in the ability to detect, destroy and keep your computer virus free?

not necessarily. It depends on what features they cut out.

AVG uses a version earlier than their non-free version.
Anti-Vir doesn't let you scan network drives or select drives for that matter; you HAVE to run a full scan.

Basically they try to make it useful but annoying enough that you'll consider to purchase the software instead of using their free version.

    okay

I don't worry too much about viruses as I'm only a home PC user. Have email Fastmail.fm which has a pretty good antivirus system (Kaspersky). But I use AVG as an extra security for those other email addresses I have that don't have antivirus measures.
Just wanted to know the differences between AVG & PANDA and from what I've been reading here my inclination is now to give PANDA a serious run.
Have to uninstall AVG and that is always a hastle. Seems that antivirus & firewall programs don't like to be uninstalled & replaced by others...

I used Panda Titanium 2005 for some time however my systems (XP and W98se) has been infected several times and W98 got messed up big times.
When asking for assistance the reply's has been with more questions even after giving the full report, then another person send a reply with more of the same questions they don't seem to read the chronology of the problems presented. Sure I get automatic updates sometimes twice a day but I do not feel they protect my system adequately.
I now use AVG on my W98se and I just update manually and according to your statement you had used it for several years so I am happy to hear that.

I still have three years of update with Panda and I am considering terminating hopefully get my money reimbursed.

    Just my 2c worth

i've ran AVG Free on my XP boxes for quite awhile and have yet to have problems with virusus and whatnot. as long as you are updated, have a good firewall and practice safe surfing, most any AV program should be sufficient
