After two weeks of running AVG 2011 I thought it was just another update, until today that is. My system randomly refused to boot into windows (XP x64). After the windows XP boot screen it goes black with the hard drive light blinking slowly at around one flash per second in a perfect pattern. I tried safe mode and it works fine. My first thought was a driver issue so I uninstalled all of the main drivers, still no boot. At this point I'm fearing the worst, as an overclocker running a new system at new ram overclocks I naturally fear data corruption. After trying everything else I can think off I drop everything down to stock and settle in for a nice lengthy format and reinstall.

After hours of reinstalling base software and drivers I am finally back to windows. I then install all of my normal software then AVG. AVG asks for a reboot, so I do. BAM, no boot again. The EXACT same problem on a fresh install at stock speeds. I rummage in the boot log file only to find that every driver load after avgidseh.sys fails. I then go into safe mode and uninstall avg completely. Now my system not only boots perfectly but boots a lot faster at that! So after over 8 hours of work and a complete format and reinstall I find out it was AVG the whole time!!!! :mad I have been using AVG for years now and it has not once let me down till now, and oh wow has it let me down. :(

Is there any one else out there experiencing issues with avg 2011 and win xp x64?

    Attached is my bootlog.

    FYI, don't see your bootlog.

Why not ditch AVG and go with either Avast or Avira.
I've used both with XP 32 with no problems.
Currently using Avast and I like it.

    Good luck.

Ah! - see you just added the log.
    Cheers :)

Took me an hour to get it off my W7 32-bit system after testing it a week or so ago: worse than some malware, it just took over my PC, hogging all CPU cycles (at what felt like highest priority), completely disregarded my settings and custom install. Nightmare!

I tried avast last night. It updated and then I rebooted. Then it hard locks right as avast loads. I go into safe mode and uninstall avast and everything boots and loads fine. What is it and my luck with anti virus lately!? :hammer I would be worried about viral shenanigans if it wasn't a brand new format and reinstall. I know all my software I installed is clean, and I haven't been online aside from here at MG. Did all the anti virus software drop support for XP x64 practically over night? :-D

I have a very similar problem except its a bit more complex. So lost night my computer was working perfectly fine but today morning it kept restarting by itself. Im going to guess that it is AVG 2011 as when I ran my computer in safe mode, the last driver line was AVGIDSEH.sys it would then restart after that. Because it keeps constantly restarting, i can't get into safe mode or run pc recovery so i can get rid of AVG. And no its not because my computer is over heating or the fans are dusty, ive cleaned them all out nicely. If any1 can help it would be greatly appreciatedd

    Welcome Spike :)

If you could access Windows at all, I'd say check your Windows Management, Security log, I think you'll find that AVG driver is logged as a 5308?, like a rootkit. Set a thief to catch a thief, I guess.

I had to resort to Safe Mode and Autoruns to disable AVG 2011 before I could fully remove it (again, with the help of Autoruns, part of the Sysinternals suite). Be ever so careful using Autoruns, not only is it capable of helping rid a PC of most malware, buggy drivers, etc., it can, if used incorrectly, stop your PC dead in it's tracks better than any buggy A/V :)

You can't use Autoruns yet (there is a command line version, if you can boot to a Prompt somehow), because you can't get into Safe Mode you'll need a bootable 'Live' CD/USB to attempt to halt AVG, I'm not sure which route/software to use as I normally nail these problems before they get this far. I'll have a think; meantime, someone else may chip in with the right answer.

Hmm, there's a way of booting like Safe Mode that allows you to disable problematic drivers, I'll go hunt for the method.

Ok, looks like Recovery Console is the key; take a read of this old AVG thread of a similar problem, I think most of the details and links are relevant, except the name(s) of the file(s) you'll need to disable.

    Reason I'll stick with Avira.
NEVER had any problems like this.

I reckon you will hrlow2, most A/V's seem to be going this route, trying to contain as many avenues of attack as they can; if Avira isn't rushing to cobble a group of disparate antimalware apps into something resembling a free 'internet security suite' to try to keep their % now that MSE's been on the scene for a year ... I'll start marinading my hat ;)

Try the Safe Mode menu again, the Recovery Console may already be installed on the hard drive.

IMO in general support has improved...

Avast works just fine on my PC running XP x64
I'm also runnng Avast on my laptop with Win 7 64bit, no problems here either
