It's been awhile since AVG did so poorly on a respected test of anti-virus software. I'd like to know what you folks think of it now. Have there been lots of defections to other programs? Should I install it when my McAfee subscription runs out in about one month? Are there other free programs that are better? Thanks.

I have been using AVG for almost a year and have remained virus free. Before that I used Norton AV for a year and also remained virus free. Maybe I am just lucky 'cause I sure read a lot about virii but have never had to deal with one (yet). I have noticed that Norton comes out with new virus definitions almost daily now while AVG only updates every other week or so. I am tempted to think this might not be good but as long as I am virus free I will stick the the free AVG.

I've been running AVG forever, and it's never let me down in anyway so far.... for now, I'll spend my money on beer and keep the AVG............

Over the last few months, AVG has caught about 7 little nasties that tried to stow away on my computer. What it hasn't killed, it stopped from hurting anything so I could boot into safe mode, and delete them. I'm not paying for something that won't do any better job then the free ones.

Arghh,, don't get me started on Norton''s products.

    Been Running AVG-ADAWARE-SPYBOT
First two for over a year and No virus/trojan yet....plus have had it running on 2 other puters w/no problem and none found yet.

I leave mine on for auto/updating itself(AVG)...so I don't get behind...I had McAfee for a couple of years and I swear they in
vent virii to make sales!....So I finally said....No more...and Even
though Norton is a free version on some puters....I have yet to see a many programs that it doesn't have some sort of conflict
    with....

I stand by it and if ya want //pay a couple bucks to AVG- and get more....But it's up to you...:D

I gotta say, the people who work at Symantec are some smart guys... If you read some of their technical reports they're smart guys (Oh, and they use UNIX ;)), they have disassembler dumps and everything well commented, Snort sigs, AV sigs, Packet dumps, disassembled code, info, etc So Norton AV is good, I personally have no opinion on AVs' as I don't use them and don't need them, but I had to comment.

Oh, and it's viruses, not virii (That's how I got this title ;))... http://www.perl.com/language/misc/virus.html

AVG for about 3 1/2 years with no problems. It has caught a few viruses from Kazaa (which is gone now. E-Mule it!) and e-mails from my brother (3 kids on a lan w/cable).

Spybot, Adaware and Kerio Personal Firewall round out the protection, as well as the normal tweaks for Messenger, UPnP and Raw Sockets.

I've had Norton, McAfee and AVG, but I've settled on Avast. It's free, does everything, and updates come out every 2 or 3 days ;)
