I just dled AVG6 Free edition, it's good and all but it takes up another 6MB at boot. I don't want it taking any. I already checked the registry folders for startup they're was one thing they're but that didnt get the 6MB back, it installed a service that I wanna get rid of but for now I just disabled. What else could it be doing at startup?

It doesn't put anything in the startup folder, whatever it's starting it's hiding somewhere. Yea I just wnat it for scanning, and I run it if I'm opening strange files and such.

Im confused, you consider 6 megs too much for an antivirus? What do you have 256, 512 megs of ram? So, you tweak your machine to what, NOT use any memory... Sort of defeats the purpose. You spend your time optimizing your machine for best performance, but some things you dont skimp on :)

6 megs is very reasonable, you need antivirus and a firwall.

Its not showing up they're... I'm sure it's AGV causing the 6MB cause I temperarly uninstalled it and I got my MB back. Do you think i t has anything to do with the AVG service? I disabled it, but mayby if I somehow removed it from the list..

You can use msconfig.exe to selectively disable startup items, whether from the Startup folder or the registry. Although I agree with MA - don't know why you'd want to disable your resident AV protection...

I never have my anti virus on all the time. Don't load it at bootup. Having your anti virus on auto protect all the time kills system performance. Just scan everything you DL before you install and you won't have a problem.

Yea, it seems like nothings starting up at startup from AVG, so i dunno why it's taking 6MB. Is they're anyway to remove 'AVG Service' from the service list?

yes, but i'd prefere to launch the AVG Control Center myself when I am downloading stuff and such.

I use Norton AntiVirus 2003 and I find it pointless to run Auto Protect all the time. All that does is slow down my system.
I have DSL and I have never had a virus on my system. Every time I download something, I scan the file for a virus before I click on it. It is very easy to avoid getting a virus if you know what you are doing. Now a firewall, I do have on my comp 24/7 but never a virus scanner.

Yea, I just wanna launch it when I'm dling stuff/serving the net, i don't want it to do anything else.

It's very easy to do that with Norton, I'm not sure about AVG I have never used it.

I may try norton then. Norton doesn't install any services/startup prgrams that arnt easily removable, ect?

I traded Norton for AVG not too long ago. Norton loads a lot of stuff; more than AVG AFAIK.

As far as wasting resources, as others have noted, I'm not at all concerned with 6 megs of my 1 gig being tied up. If it's not tying up cpu cycles, how is it hurting anything? I DO disable it when gaming, so it's not churning through all the files while I'm gaming. And that's easy. Double click the tray icon, uncheck the boxes for checking your system, click OK, and have fun. Reverse the process to re-enable. Just a bit more tedious than disabling Norton temporarily, but not enough to switch back.

I used to run Norton and my ISP talked me into AVG instead, because sometimes when you updated Norton it would mess with some settings, plus the bloat. Now the good well informed geeks on this forum talked me into a firewall even if I am using a DU. The pair works good together, Thanks one and all.

After you install Norton it will load a bunch of things at startup and even launch a new Service. But it is so simple to go into options and turn it off. Shut down the service in Administrive Options. I like Norton I have been using it for years. The only problem is you have to buy it.

I take extra precaution. I turn off install on demand in internet explorer and I disable install Active X in internet options.

I have done this for years and it works fine. I have never ever had a virus and I download tons and tons of files.

Yes I agree Norton loads tons of stuff after you install it. That's why you go into the options and disable all of it. After that it loads nothing... it's easy to disable it.

I agree with you.. and I must say I am not very familiar with embedded viruses. Maybe you can explain that to me? All I know is I run a firewall all the time and only scan for viruses when I DL new files and it works fine. If anyone is not comfortable with this, by all means run the virus at startup!!!

Yea, alright. All I wanna know is how to get rid of all the stuff AVG runs in the backround, and if that's to hard then what anti-virus program can I get that will only run anything when I tell it too?

I'm on windows xp, I don't have that in MSConfig, I have the services tab and the startup tab, but the service tab has nothing about AVG and the startup tab has nothing.

EDIT : Hey, I think it's the shell extension dealie taking up the MBs. Can I get rid of this somehow?

  23. Max Powerz

Haha, welll.... what's the AVG Service do? Can I get rid of that somehow, like, remove it from the list instead of just disabling it?

Well i do like being able to right click a file and goto "scan for virus's" when I get a not sure about file.. Are you sure they'res no way to remove the AVG Service dealie? What exactly does it do?

For grins, I disabled AVG's service, and unchecked AVG in MSCONFIG, rebooted, and nothing relating to AVG shows up in Task Manager. No Systray icon, no footprint whatsoever.

Right-click scan choice still works in an Explorer window, manual scan still works, and I sent myself a plain email in Outlook, and the return still shows the AVG scan certification, so it appears it still fully functional. Other than staying dead until I ask for something, it appears to be fully functional. Although I don't have a real virus to test it on. (shrug)

Isn't that minimalist enough for you?

Yea, mines free too... But, I just wanna remove the AVG Service from the list alright, as far as I can tell, it does nothing and it's annoying me being theyre, lol. How do I remove it?

Hm. When I open Outlook, "agentsvr.exe" pops up in Task Manager, along with OUTLOOK.exe, which is evidently why email scanning still works. It goes away again when I close Outlook, returning the clutter count to zero.

Not sure exactly what the AVG Service does in the free version, but it doesn't appear to need it. Maybe it's only needed for the Systray Icon to sit there?

Yea, man, when will these companys stop clugging windows with crap, ugg. So... can't I remove the service somehow? Like with a reg edit or something? Where does windows keep the info on all the services? Like, which ones to list..

    G.T. R.I.P February 4, 2007. You will be missed.

Hm. Some programs will either run as a program OR as a Service. AVG Free appears to be one of them. I re-enabled it in MSCONFIG & got the Systray Icon back, and can still configure it to scan automatically or not, can configure automatic updating and/or automatic scanning, and the footprint in Task Manager is now about 1.5 megs, while it's still covering my backside with full time scanning enabled. With the Service disabled.

Somebody that understands Services better than me may be able to explain the advantages/disadvantages of running as a program rather than a service, but it seems to work either way.

Max, you access Services via Control Panel/Performance and Maintenance/Administrative Tools/Services. Scroll down to AVG, double-click it, and change Automatic Startup to Disabled. That's it.. it's gone.

But before monkeying with other Services, check Black Viper's site or any of the other good Services guides for what to disable, as you can cripple or totally hose Windows if you set them wrong.

[edit] Either Star's direct method, or drilling down through Control Panel takes you to the same place.

Hey star, what OS do you run? And I ment removing it from the list compleatly, not just disabling... I guess it doesn't really matter tho. I just hate anything starting up with windows, And yea I've done most of black vipers stuff, been testing everything.

EDIT: I'm only 15 I'm on a "budget comp", only 256MB, if I had 1GB like you guys I wouldent worry. I should be getting 512MB soon tho... (come onnn birthday).

Windows Services are integral to Windows. AFAIK, you don't uninstall them completely, period. But disabling them does just that. They don't start, they don't load, they're gone, as far as your system is concerned. Don't worry about them.

Alright, the 6MB is still gone tho, and if I uninstall AVG I get my 6MB back, any ideas what this could be?
