avg8 slowing down my pc

hi all,i hope i have put this thread in the right section.Anyway i have just for formatted my computer back to the factory conditions and it worked pretty quick until i downloaded the free avg 8.I used free avg 7.5(i think) prior to me reformatting the pc and it wasn't too bad but this version is slow and i cannot find the old version to d-load.Does anyone have any suggestions please i cannot afford to buy one so a free one will have to do:-o.
Also is it best to enable my windows firewall or will the avg do the same job,i had it enabled prior to me refomatting the pc.

Just a quick comment here. AVG Anti-Virus Free is not a firewall. So, you should definitely have Windows firewall or some other firewall enabled.

Uninstall v8 then reinstall BUT during the install when you get to the part where default is selected, change the setting to custom. A few screens later, you will be presented with a tree showing what will be installed. Remove the checkmark from the link scanner. If you never download email to your computer, you can also uncheck the email scanner.

Be sure that you have no other antivirus or anti-malware programs working in realtime because AVG 8 is not only an av app but it now includes an anti-malware scanner.

thanks for that usafveteran i left the firewall enabled just in case.
