This PC has a clean install of WinXP Home SP2. All drivers are installed. Everything is working 100%. I'm using the PC now to type this, so it obviously connects to the web w/o issue. No matter how I try to update a new clean AVG8Free install, it will not update. It says "connection failed". Attached below are two screen shots....
    :cry H E L P ! ! ! :crybaby

(I turned off the Windows firewall in case that was doing anything, it made no difference)

I'm having the same problem, Win XP Pro SP3. Maybe we should just monitor this for awhile and see whether it resolves itself.

Mine hasn't been updating either today. I guess it's their website because I tried to access their FAQ site and it ain't working either. PITA to see that pop-up notifying that update failed every time.

I think it was just the AVG servers today.

If it lasts more then on day just do a clean install of AVG with the newest version.

    Great Anti-virus!

Since I had this problem in March on another computer, I knew exactly what to do today when the problem occurred.
Look in your hosts file. See if there is an entry 193.86.103.19 guru.grisoft
Comment it out by putting # in front of it. Problem solved!

I never touch the host file. This has happened to me on two computers with two different versions of AVG so I'm sort of leaning towards a glitch on their end.

Incidentally, in March when I hung around the AVG forums asking questions and trying things until it was resolved, I was not the only person who had the entry in the hosts file.

Yeah.... I think it was a Grisoft server crash or something because all is well today...

It was definitely Grisoft. I checked out their website throughout the day yesterday and there were many posters asking the very same question.

Yes Mark, I was permanently blocked. (two different computers, 8 months apart and running two different versions of AVG) I was pointing out what did happen to some people. Since it happened to me and other people, it could have been dlb's problem.

Happened to a friends PC with AVG on and as I know as MarkT pointed out that Grisofts update servers are not robust and do go offlin, then its wise to manually update and wait for around 24hrs for Grisoft to fix the update issue.

Seems back to normal today. BUT TBH its something they need to sort out if they wish to remain a viable AV, they need redundant backup server to come online asap of main guru one goes offline.

Are you guys using Free or Pro versions?

I have never had the pro version go off-line.
But the free one once in awhile, but being it's free it works great!
I think AVG does a good job for being free.

If you have problems re-installing or up-dating.
Remove all references to AVG from your registry and re-install.
Be sure to back up the registry first.

Keep in the back of your mind that it is possible your AVG Free someday will not update either automatically or manually. Then have a look in your hosts file.
If I can't update for a day or two, I don't worry because I suspect the servers are overloaded, particularly when they do the large 3 month new engine thing and the download is larger. But when it stretches to three or four days and every other computer in the house can update with no problem, then I want to know what is wrong with the one computer that can not update. (That was my situation in March 2008). I am registered at the AVG forum and I posted sytems specs, etc. and kept bugging the poor forum administrators to give me ideas of what could be wrong and where to look.
Thankfully, one of the admins told me to check my hosts file. I was shocked to find the grisoft entry in there because I don't ever edit the hosts file. The only thing in there besides grisoft was the normal blah, blah, blah and
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    127.0.0.1 localhost
