Hello. I am 500 miles away trying to help my mom with her pc. Here is what is happening....

She tried to open IE today and this error came up
"the instruction at 0x7c9101b3 reference at 0x781ffcfe memory can not be written. avgnsx.exe application error"

I told her to try to open Firefox instead, but it was removed from the system this morning. I had restore her pc to yesterdays date. It worked and Firefox was back, but getting the same error message that IE does. She can not access the web at all. She is running on XP sp3, 512mb. Her device manager shows no problems either. I had her run Super AntiSpyware and her AVG, both came back with nothing. Not sure what to tell her from here. I can get some more system specs from her if you need them. But she can not DL anything from the internet ... she could not even post on here if she wanted to. Is there anything I can do to help her out?

    g'day allie1kat

avgnsx.exe is the resident shield component of avg antivirus she should be able to check if this is causing her internet issues by disabling it in the advanced setting menu in the program.if she is the able to get on to the internet then uninstall and reinstalling avg will rectify the error with the resident shield.

    Try the following ...

DISABLE the LinkScanner component from within the AVG user interface.

Is connection to the internet now available in IE and Firefox?

    Edit: @ iwunderdownunder ....
No, this is not the resident shield (avgrsx): It is the LinkScanner component.

Thanks for both posts guys. I called and told her to try both of your suggestions, but neither worked. Still no internet. She is going to try reinstalling AVG just in case. I will let you know if it helps.

Update: She uninstalled the entire program and she is back online. I told her though not to go browsing online until she had a new anti virus software set up. She is kind of leary now about installing AVG again (I said "whats the worst that can happen? You have to uninstall again?") But she wont, so what do you recommend for free Antvirus other than AVG? (that is also what I use).

Thanks again to both of you for helping me out, it is really appreciated!

ooop's my misinformation but still turned out to be avg was the culprit.myself i stopped using avg awhile ago as it used to much resources on my machine.
there are a few good freeware av's to choose from avira antivir personal is one and avast home addition is another.at the moment i am using the new Microsoft security essentials and all seems to working well have had no infections.
personally it really is your own judgment check out what is available here " http://www.majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=20 " this is mg's top freeware picks just scroll down to antivirus section.
    good luck.

I am replacing AVG with AntiVir. It has a much smaller footprint and doesn't seem to be as much of a resource hog.
One thing, some times the updates fail, especially if the download is large, but there is an easy way to go online, download the update and then open the program and select manually install.
