o.k, basically my computer plays dvds and quicktime movies without a
problem but any avi or divx files playback with lines running down the
screen. This only occurs with the graphics card, if i use the on board
graphics everything works fine. I have all he up to date video drivers
installed as well as most recent codecs(klite mega pack). there are also
pink dots that appear on folder icons. I'm on the second card (x1650pro
pci e) as I thought it was a faulty card. I have even uninstalled
windows and reinstalled it from scratch. hardware is: amd athlon 64 3500+,
MSI K9vgm v class motherboard, saphirre radeon x1650pro, western digital
    80gb hdd.

Just a shot in the dark here.... but maybe your RAM is flakey or has some type of conflict with the video card; or maybe the BIOS is having an issue with the video card. Go to www.msicomputer.com (if you're in the USA- otherwise go to www.msi.com.tw and choose your locale/country) and look for a possible BIOS update that addresses ATI video card compatibility problems or video problems in general. I know, not much help, but it's something ;)

had a look at MSI website and it does say; "MSI Reminds You...
    • This mainboard doesn't support any ATI X300 series-based graphic card."
does an x1650 count as part of the x300 series?

NO! The x1650 is part of the x1600 series. But, since MSI does mention a compatibility issue with ATI cards (even if it is the lowly x300) a BIOS update may be in your future. On the other hand: I've a few problems with the x1600 series in general. Most of the problems were with the Sapphire x1600 Pro 512mb AGP cards and that was about a year ago. But the problems came up often enough for me to think that something was up with those cards. I haven't had many problems with the x1650's tho'. Try a video driver update (if you haven't already), a chipset driver update (if applicable) and maybe the dreaded ( ;) ) BIOS update....

o.k i've done the whole driver thing and updated everything to most recent. How would i go about updating the chipset or bios? bear in mind I'm not the most experienced computer geek!
