Hey guys. I'm only 13, so If I sound a bit dumb here, sorry.

Now, I'm trying to play .AVI movies on Windows Media Player 9.0. I downloaded the newest DivX Codec (5.21), install it using the installer, But I still can't play .AVI files. I then try to convert the .AVI files into something else using first off, Super DVD Creator. It comes up with an error saying:

    Not Supported Media Format
    RenderFile (wFile)

I then try to convert it in #1 Video Converter, doesn't even convert properly. I then use OSS Video Converter, Converts it, but no picture, just sound. This is really irratating, and I think I've tried every program you can to somehow get them to work. My main problem here is, when I go to convert them into different formats they NEVER work, and when I install the DivX codec, WMP still can't play .AVI.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, so sorry in advance if I have posted in the wrong forum. PLEASE HELP ME!

Firstly, make sure that you set up Windows Media Player correctly.

In Tools, Options, make sure you have "Download Codecs Automatically" checked. (While you are at it, download Media Player 10, it's a slight improvement)

You then need to determine the type of codec used. Unlike other Windows files, the extension is not used to determine what the file is. For example, you may have several *.avi files, all with different codecs.

One of the best tools to use to determine the codec is G-Spot, available from HERE.

That will tell you the codec for the video file in question, whether you have it or not, and where to get it if you don't.

If you are using Windows Media Player to play it, it's set up correctly and has internet access, then hopefully if it needs the correct codec, it will simply download it.

    Otherwise, just use G-Spot.

Do you have Windows Movie Maker? If so, you can just convert your .avi files to .wmv files. Works for me. ;)

animatorStrike, I'm running on Windows 98, so I don't have Movie Maker, but trust me, I'd LOVE it heh.

Insomniac, Thanks HEAPS. I'm going to try some of the stuff you suggested and then hit you up on here to tell you what happened. Thanks.

I used G-Spot and apparently I have the Div3 codec installed. So, I go to play it in WMP, nope, "Class Not Registered". I also went into the options and stuff and yes, Automatically download codecs is ticked. Aargh, So frustrating. And what also annoys me is I can't even convert them to different formats.

I was on the site. I didn't really know what I was looking at until I saw the codecs. I've installed 3.11 Alpha and 5.21 and all that crap but nothing ever works!!!

    A brief warning,

There are literally hundreds of codecs, and some can make your system unusable, so only install ones you are sure of and need.

To make things simple, as well as G Spot, use AVI Codec and Video Inspector. All are freeware.

They will provide web links for the relevant codecs you need.

It's much better than blindly installing various codec packs.

Windows Media Player only includes basic codecs as most are licenced and Bill is too cheap.

Did i miss something here? Why not just play your avi's off the divx player. Don't use windows media player. When you download the divx codec you should've gotten divx player 2.1 just use that.

The "divx codec" is basically mpeg 4, and it won't play everything.

You still need to find the type of codec the file uses, and have that installed.

If it's not on your computer, then no media player will work, be it Media Player, Media Player Classic or DivX.

They all work the same, they just use the installed codecs. Divx Player is no better or worse than Media Player.

187 the tools I suggested work, but if you get stuck, post back and someone will help.

    Good luck.
