Will .avi files (movies, etc) play on a std. home DVD player? And, if not, are there any free apps that will convert .avi to std. DVD format? (MPEG4 I think).... I have a couple of movies in .avi format that I'd like to watch on my home theater system.... Any help, links, suggestions, etc. will be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pending on the player, I have a $400 Sony dvd changer that I bought in 1999, that refuses to play anything but store bought cds and dvds.

Then I bought an el cheapo from sears, that can play just about anything out there.

So, I'd recommend, checking what your dvd player can handle.

There are loads of apps available for audio and video conversions. just do a search in google and you will most certainly find one appropriate for what you want.

Two that I use regularly are Premiere Elements and Magic Video Batch Converter.
I've recommended them a few times before, maybe here or on other forums, so I probably sound like an advert for them, which I'm not. I just use what I know works.

Here's a link to a page with some download links on it . .

i use 'easy avi divx xvid to dvd', i got it off a p2p. but you can get a trial at http://www.divxtodvd.net/. i ''''found''' a key. and get it free. it takes my avi file, 700 to 800 mb. and 1 hour to 90 min later out pops a dvd ready to take to my friends house to watch on his old dvd player. its worth to buy. there is also a mpeg to dvd program too.

Some newer players will play mpeg1/2 and divx files. Read your player's documentation to determine if it is one of those.

This works great and it does not require an act of software thievery because it is free. It doesn't have a menu creation function, but you won't need one unless you insist on cramming several movies on one disc. More than 4 hours of movies and quality suffers noticeably.
