avi to mp4

I've tried 2 converters, (3gb and Any Video Converter) to convert .avi to .mp4 for the ipod. The resulting .mp4 file audio is out of sync with the video when played back through iTunes or WMP or ipod). Does this mean my computer's hardware or a processor is bad?

As a side note, oddly, when I play the file through the built in player in the Any Video Converter, the resulting file is in sync?

 

Its been my experience that avi files that are produced with VBR audio are the culprits 90% of the time when it comes to sync. For that reason when I get an avi, the first thing I do is open it with GSpot and check the audio. If the audio is VBR I open the avi with Virtual Dub, set the Video section to Direct Stream (no encoding occurs just copies the video) and the Audio section to Full Processing and select "no compression pcm" (which is default so I don't really have to select it as the compression). Then select "File" and "save as" and give it a new name (I usually just add pcm to the end before the .avi (takes less than 2min for a 700mb file). Now I open the new pcm audio file with V dub and this time as compression for the audio choose mp3 or ac3 at the same bitrate as the original (gspot will show the originals bitrate) so the size remains similar. This encode usually takes about 5-8min.

You can go directly from the original vbr audio to mp3 or ac3 CBR without the pcm step, but since it only takes a few minutes and the direct method fails every once in a while, I go thru the whole thing for all my avi files.

The only problem with using Virtual Dub to convert Audio is sometimes the bitrate selection for mp3 is limited to 56kbps because of a change Windows does in the registry and System32. If that is the case for you you can download the ac3 version from AudX.com along with the audx codec, or ask and I'll tell you how to fix mp3 but its another story, I already took too much time. When I do this it makes it look complicated when its not, you just have to get used to V Dub and its great.

Once you have this CBR audio file it will convert to mp4 for you with no issues. OH!, V Dub and V Dub Mod are usually no install freeware apps, you just extract to a folder somewhere and make your own shortcuts from the exe file (send to desktop create shortcut), just make sure you get the right exe.

 

Thanks for your reply. This was slightly over my head. If I send you an .avi, would you have time and be so kind as to convert it to an .mp4 sycned up.

 

Actually, I don't make mp4's, I don't have an iPod so I don't even need the software, but what I will do is convert your avi to a good one and send it back to you for you to convert to mp4. All I will do is convert the audio to uncompressed pcm then to mp3 and upload it to where ever you want, I will not touch the video so it will keep its original quality.

Well I downloaded the file but it will not extract. its a rar inside a zip and the rar file will not come out of the zip file (corrupt) I'll try and download again but I think something is not right. Don't zip a rar file, it makes no sense, just upload the rar by itself. You can name it anything you want, call it X.rar

 

Stupid website, I had a whole set of instructions for you and it would not put them in because it took longer than 10min. The file is not corrupt its an 831mb rar file inside that 198 zip file I downloaded and that will not do. It would take more than four 198mb zips to get the entire file over and I'm not willing to go that route when all you have to do is download 5mb of programs and do it yourself.

Download both files, extract the Virtual dub to C > Program Files (it will make its own folder Virtual Dub Mod, go there and right click the virtualdubmod.exe file and select send to desktop create short cut. then install the aud-x program and I will run you thru the steps I already posted again.

If you choose to install Virtual Dub mod and Aud-x here are the steps to use to convert the video to PCM and then to ac3 cbr audio which should convert to mp4 with no issues.

1. Start Virtual Dub and FILE > OPEN your video, when you get a vbr audio warning just click NO
2. Under File look in "file information" to see what the original audio bitrate is, you will need it later
3. Under the Video Tab select Direct Stream and close
4. Under the Streams Tab right click the audio and select Full Processing and close
5. File > Save As give it a new name (I usually just add pcm before the .avi of the same name
6. Without closing V Dub, open the new pcm file you just created
7. Leave the Video section in Direct Stream but for the Audio this time choose Compression and ac3, you will need to enter the same (or close) bitrate as the original to keep the file sizes similar in your case I would go a little lower
8. Now save the file one more time and play it to make sure its ok, then delete the large PCM file but keep your original for now
9. Convert the new file to MP4 and cross your fingers
