Every time its laggs like that i hear like my comps making that noise it does when its working alots and then it stop that noise and it goes back to normal.

Anyway im wondering how do avoid this lag ? what helps avoid this lag interms off more memory or more cd space? better video card?

i am thinking you need better video because on-board video stinks so the best thing to do is upgrade the video and maybe the ram sometime soon but untell you are able to upgrade you might try updating your drivers

if i get a new video card will my computer still support opengl ?

Yes! Onboard controllers suck especially if you play computer games often. A new video card will support opengl. Recommending a card depends on whether the computer comes with an agp slot or if it only has PCI slots available. After you find that out tell how much you're willing to spend. Then, people can suggest some ideas on a video card.

how do i find out if i have pci or agp?

You have an AGP slot. I've looked on the compaq website, found your computer's specs, and under expansion slots, AGP is listed, as open for expansion. Which means, you can buy an AGP gfx card.
There are two brands you can really buy for graphics card, NVidia and ATI. Personally, I was an NVidia fanboy until recently, when i made the switch to ATI's X800 range. What graphics card to buy for you depends on how much money you are willing to spend... if you could tell us that, we can recomment a graphics card.

AGP is the brown slot on ur motherboard to make it simple. spend at least 150.00 on a 3d card. an ATI radeon series is a good choice or a NVIDEA. I have both on seperate pc's and have no regrets on the cash spent. If you like to play games, get at least a 64 mb card..or for the extra 50.00, go 128mb, you will not regret it.

Minimum ram on a video card should always be 128mb; unless your planning to play games that are 5+yrs old. If your going to spend 400$+ on your video card make sure you have 256mb on the card. If the card is low budget in the 100$~ range; dont bother with 256mb. I also recommend to spend 180-200$ on a video card; the "minimum" card you should be getting at that price is the 6600GT 128mb. Check out places like newegg.com for good deals; buying retail is shooting urself in the foot.

kk where can i find like the specs of my video card? on my computer.

because all it says is Intel(R) 82845G Graphics Controller. is it 64,128 mb?

Where do i find the spec so i can compare with the one im gonna buy?

The 82845G runs I believe up to DX8 instructions with some restrictions. AKA Sh*t. Just about anything you buy above 50$ will be better then that controller. Also the controller shares memory (95% likely) off your main system ram, so it hampers your system down even more. These onboard graphx controllers are 64mb.

With onboard gfx card, if you go to the BIOS, you can specify how much memory it will use. HOwever:

    a) It's using system memory. So, your computer has 512MB Ram, if you specify for the onboard to use 64mb of that, effectively, you will have 448MB Ram. If you specify 32MB, your comp. will report 480MB system memory. So, the more you take away, the less effective RAM you will have. Which sucks.

    b) Your onboard gfx card, as Omegamerc pointed out, is DX8 compatible, with restrcitions. current generation games use DX9c ... if your gfx card isn't DX9 compatible, it can and will run DX9 games, but they will be ugly and run like poo. Anything you can likely buy in the GFX market today will be DX9 compatible, which is the good news.

    c) You have a decent computer. By all accounts, the bottleneck in your system will be the gfx card - you really should upgrade it, as you are planning.

What to buy? Well, it's down to personal choice. The two main competitors, as I said, are ATI and NVidia. There really isn't that much real difference in what you buy - ATI is just as good as NVidia, and NVidia is just as good as ATI. The problem used to be taht ATI didn't upgrade their drivers often enough, but lately, this has changed, and are now producing solid drivers with regular releases. Personally, I prefer ATI, but only because when I bought my X800, it was the best price for what I was looking for (but this was when the X800 was brand spanking new technology). In your price range, I'd probably aim for a an NVidia 6600GT, or (but I don't really know what these ones are like) an ATI X700.

well i got more money that i expected that i can spend on the card how is the

    RADEONĀ® X850 XT
    Pixel Pipelines 16
    Vertex Engines 6
    Engine Clock 520MHz
    Memory 256MB
    Memory Clock 1080MHz
    Memory Interface 256-bit
    MSRP $499

would this be a good price for the quality?

    That's a nice card. I'm jealous :)

Too much card for your pc; that would be wasting money. Get a 6800 or a X800 (non ultra/pro/xt) and get 512mb more ram. You will get much better performance off your pc.
