Back Up Fails

    I am trying to back up my Recovery D: drive on my HP Pavillion running Vista. I get an error msg stating: A shadow copy could not be created for the following reason: Insufficient storage available to create either the shadow copy storage file or other shadow copy data. (0x8004231F). I am wasting Dual Layer disks like crazy trying to back up 7.7 GBs of data. Please help.
