    What kind of backup?

If you want to backup your data, simply copy the important files to a safe location (I use an external hard drive, but burning to DVD/CD is just as good), and you're done.

If you want to take an exact image of your hard drive, including operating system, programs, settings, and all data, then you would image the drive with a tool like HDClone. This way, if something goes wrong with your operating system, you can simply overwrite your hard drive with this image, and it will be like nothing's changed. Saves you having to rebuild.
