Hey all, I'm running Windows 7 and am using Norton as my anti-malware. Every time I boot my PC Norton pops up with a detection of "backdoor.graybird" but no action can be taken and it suggest to eject drive H (which is a virtual drive that I created using Daemon Tools). This occurred directly after I installed a program that I needed to mount using Daemon Tools.

So the first thing I did was unmount the program, then I uninstalled the program and rooted through my computer deleting all files related to that program, both the install files and the download files. However, the problem still persists.

I've scanned with Malwarebytes, spybot S&D, and AVG, along with Norton obviously, and none of these scans found backdoor.graybird. The only time it shows up is when I boot my computer and norton immediately reports the trojan. Periodically when using my computer the Norton detection pop-up will appear reporting the same trojan, so, having tried everything in my power to remove it, I simply close the norton pop-up and continue on my work, only to have the pop-up appear again some time later or whenever I re-boot.

I have not noticed any lack of performance on my machine as a result, but it is becoming very irritating to be interrupted by Norton's detection of this trojan and, of course, I am also concerned about having this trojan present on my computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

    Here is the exported result:

I attempted to complete all the steps. I cannot run rootrepeal because my OS is 64-bit. I ran combofix but the program hung at stage 4, I waited for about an hour and ultimately closed combofix after there was no progress. Thanks for any help. After running all scans, I still had the Norton detection of backdoor.graybird.

    What is your h: drive?

I am not finding the malware in your logs. But let's have you do this:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now copy just the bold text below to notepad (Do not include any space above the word REGEDIT). Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now download and run:
    HitMan Pro

Let me know how that goes.

My h drive is a virtual drive that I created using Daemon tools. However, I have disabled Daemon tools and drive h does not appear in "my computer", but the problem still continued.

I had to uninstall Norton to entirely disable it's features. Even disabling norton at startup would not keep Norton Security Suite from opening. So I obviously havn't seen a trace of backdoor.graybird since then because Norton was the only program that ever detected it.

I followed all above steps, the registry edit was successful and I ran Hitman pro, it detected 60 tracking cookies and 1 threat: MGtools, which I know is not a threat. I have not clicked "next" in Hitmanpro, as I wanted to update you on its results before the attempted removal step. MGtools was the only thing detected except for tracking cookies.

I will leave hitman pro minimized until I receive your suggested course of action. I do not know if this has worked yet, because I have not yet re-installed Norton. Once I receive your instruction to either close or move ahead with hitman, then I will reinstall norton and see if it detects backdoor.graybird again.

    Thanks

Since Norton is only finding these files:
    h:\razor1911\the_sims_3_keygen.exe - No action taken
    h:\razor1911\the_sims_3_keygen.exe - Failed

Which are in your virtual drive, we can either try to remove them, or you can delete your virtual drive and re-create it.

To try to remove it, download OTL to your desktop.

Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.

    • Copy and Paste the following code into the Custom Scans/Fixes textbox. Do not include the word Code

    Code:
    :processes
    killallprocesses
    :files
    h:\razor1911\the_sims_3_keygen.exe
     :commands
    [PURITY]
    [EMPTYTEMP]
    [RESETHOSTS]
    [REBOOT]

    • Then click the Run Fix button at the top.
    • Click the OK button.
    • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot. Just close notepad and attach this log form OTL to your next message.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Now see if you still get the message.

I just did all steps above, then I reinstalled Norton and restarted my computer. For the first time, I have not had backdoor.graybird detected by Norton immediately after boot up. Problem solved. I included the log as an attachment.

Tim, thank you so much for you help and patience! I thought I would be stuck with this problem forever! Thanks again so much!

Interesting, since OTL didn't find the file.

But if you are not having issues, guess you are good to go.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
