This was supposed to be written in upper case for effect but it looks too offensive to read so I'll have to settle for hammering the keys REAL hard.
After 10 days my computer is back on line. Prior to this I sat down at the desk and noticed Norton had an x through it. When I clicked on it I was informed that it needed to be reinstalled. After checking with my daughter, it had been out for 2 days! "She hadn't seen me" I figured a good time to try Avast. It found a backdoor trojan during setup. Tried to remove it...no. The more I did the slower things got. Firewall was constantly blocking in and out. After bargains, and search relevency and bullseye, and search assistant, and sahagent, I decided to reformat. Worked great 'till it reached 99% then said it couldn't reformat. Managed quick format but all nastys returned.
Finally, after deleting all suspicious from registry and system32, and all other places including the mysterious temp file in my hard drive menu, I managed a full format and install. One thing seems strange, I didn't need to reinstall my cable connection software??? Maybe I'm a LITTLE paranoid but I can't help thinking that I haven't seen the last of that crap. All other repair attempts had failed by now.

You never needed your cable connection software in the first place, if it came from your provider. All that stuff does is clog up your machine and make it easier for them to track what you're doing.

As long as you have the proper drivers for your modem, etc., you don't need any other software to connect to the internet. You just have to know what your email settings are so you can manually configure it.

Thanks Sarge for clearing that up. One less thing to be paranoid about.

and I watch where I go, doesn't always work
Maybe that's why I'm here all the time,, it's so safe & fuzzy feeling :)
