Backspace as I type

For a couple of days I've found that when I'm typing into the search bar, or in Facebook, my Asus Laptop running Windows Vista is backspacing so that each letter I type overwrites the previous one. I have to type a letter, wait a few seconds until the highlight over it disappears, then slowly type the rest.

It seems that while I am typing the processor is working very hard, the green light is blinking very quickly.

Also my mouse seems to be getting out of control. When I want to highlight a single word, it is zooming off and selecting chunks of text.

I have checked the backspace key, there is nothing lodged under it. Please does anybody have any suggestions?

Thank you, I'll get over there.

Just to follow up, I began the malware removal process, and the first thing that happened was that RogueKiller crashed. I did then run all the other anti-malware programs, and they all reported that no malware was found.

I've passed the problem to somebody else now, as there are other issues on my laptop now and I'm not confident in dealing with them myself.
