Is there a way to make a backup copy of MS Office if I have multiple licenses, so I can keep a backup in a different location?

I would contact Microsoft about the legal issues concerning making a personal archival back up of Office for security reasons. I'm sure it's OK, but I'm not a Microsoft lawyer (thank God ;) ). I hope I'm not breaking any rules here, and I'm NOT advocating piracy in any shape, form, manner, or means, but I would think any CD burning software would do the job: Nero, Roxio, NTI, etc... Again, check the legality of it. This is actually an interesting topic; I'd like to know exactly what is allowed and what is considered 'piracy'.

Thanks for your response. After reading it, I did some research to make sure I was doing things by the book.

The good news is that I found information on Microsoft's site on how to make a disk image with the following stipulations:

"Copy the entire compressed image onto a CD and distribute copies to users. The volume label of the CDs you create must match the volume label of the Office 2003 CD for Setup to run properly from the custom CDs. The CDs that you create can be used in the same way as the original Office CD, except that Setup runs with your modifications.

Important You must obtain the proper user licenses before copying, modifying, or distributing a customized version of the Office 2003 CD. For more information about volume licensing programs, contact your software reseller or see the Microsoft Microsoft Licensing Web site."

So, it appears that the bottom line is that you should have valid licenses for each computer you install it on, which is common sense.

Here's the link, if anyone would like more details:

    I hope this helps others.

BTW, does anyone know how to view the cd volume label?

I discovered how to find the volume label and thought I'd share.

At command prompt type "vol X:" (without quotes) where X is the drive letter for whichever drive holds the cd. You can also use this command to find the volume label for other drives and storage devices.

You must have permissions as an administrator or as a backup operator on your computer to back up files and folders. Backup operators and administrators can back up and restore encrypted files and folders without decrypting the files or folders.

If you have the original installation disks for the programs you use, it is usually not necessary to back up your programs. Instead, back up only the documents you have created.

Win XP comes with a back up program click start, programs, accessories, system tools, then click back up.

Creating a back up location other than the installed location does not violate the software licenses but loading the software on more than one system does violate the license.

"Volume" is just a fancy word used to mean the name of the disk. Open an Explorer Window and have a look to see what they called the disk.

If I use vol d: on the disk currently in my drive I get: W2POEM_EN and if I look at the disk name in Explorer I get exactly the same information. But if you want the volume serial number, you need to run vol x: as far as I know.

I'm trying to create a backup of the installation disk, not documents. I also mentioned that I have multiple licenses and pointed out that each pc the program is installed on will need its own license.
