backup script

hi guys i was hoping that someone could come up with a script that would allow me to backup and restore files to their appropriate directories, i.e. wp files to wp directory, simple enough for me to understand and work. maybe options for 1.backup then for 2.restore and 3.quit, dont know how to explain properly as complete noob on this.
