So my mother called me because my computer which I left in her care in the states while I am in Korea was refusing to start. Instead it beeped repeatedly. She said it had been shutting down suddenly while using it, so I said it was Sasser. Since the computer refused to start, she couldnt get the Sasser patch, so she took it to the neighborhood yokel, who said it was a bad memory chip and replaced it.

Comp works fine now, so cool, but get this: He said turning your computer on and off causes the chip to lose its capabilities over time. The computer is 2 years old. Does this sound like BS to anyone else?

I don't know. Could just be bad gas.

Yes, it's BS. Startup/shutdown temp changes DO age electronic components somewhat, but they should run for years shutting down when they're not needed. It's possible that the memory DID fail, but not just because of turning it off when not needed.

thank you so much. i couldnt agree more with the assessments that turning on/off does not in any significant way ruin memory chips.
