bad DSL connection

I just got an ethernet card and upgraded to DSL. Something about my connection is wrong and my system has become very unstable:

When i access the internet i get a message in the connection window that says "cannot find gateway" but it manages to connect anyway. I know something is wrong because the little icon in the system stray that represents the modem has one yellow screen and one green screen, instead of two green screens. It's the top screen that's yellow.


My system has become unstable also, with lots of freezes latley. Once i got a "WINDOWS DEVICE IOS error" on boot up. But then rebooted normally and the problem went away. I once got a message: "HARDWARE MONITOR found an error. Enter Power Setup menu for Details" and ended in up in some crazy thing called "AWARD Bios SETUP UTILITY". I just exited and rebooted and it resolved itself.


What does "cannot find gateway" mean?

What's with the yellow+ green screen? When i had dial-up they where both green.

 

If you have not posted, what are the following?

1) OS being used?
2) Are you using a Router between your modem and computer in question?
3) What model of Router if being used, and model and manufacturer of modem?
4) Also, did you happen to install the software that came from your provider (do not need it, due to makes more problems than it is worth if you use WinXP).

 

Another thing to check is your Ethernet Adapter Drivers, etc. Go into Settings and under System check your device manager and make sure you drivers loaded correctly.
