I have a 4 year old MSI K9A2GM-FIH Socket AM2+mMotherboard, AMD 780G chipset that I was told has some counterfeit capacitors which have gone bad. Unable to locate a replacement & was told it could be repaired by replacing the bad with new ones. Is this the only solution or is there a viable alternative that might be 'plug & Play'? TIA.

i'd replace the board personally. actually i have a board i'll just give you if you could trust me with shipping costs. its a GIGABYTE GA-M61P-S3 AM2. either way it'll end up costing you more than its worth to repair that one shes ready for the bone yard i'm afraid. the good news is you can get mainboards with the 880 chipset for 80 to 100 bucks.

Many thanks-I really appreciate the offer, especially since I obviously don't know too much about this. Hope you don't mind a few ?'s b4 I get into this any further. Am I correct in assuming that I can't just install this new board put the pc back together & everything will be 'as it was'? What else will be involved in this adventure? Just wondering if I'll be able to do this without software issues etc after the new board installation? I'd really like to salvage this machine if possible. TIA

when i built a new system new mb gpu cpu i didn't reinstall windows after the change over and it worked out just fine. windows 7 found all the necessary drivers. i had to go google driving for a few myself but i never lost any data. in any case that msi board is done you have to do something.

Probably would be a lot better off if I was running W7 but it's xp3. Was running a project & really wanted to continue it on that pc. Guess I have no choice but to install new mb. Could you please pm me with your info, etc? One thing in my favor is that I have a complete Acronis hd backup from 3-3 so I haven't lost too much if I have major problems. Thx.

    Hi PC:

Change of plans. I figure since I have a complete backup thru 3-3 and even with a 'new' motherboard, I'll still have an old machine I may as well just go ahead & buy a new pc. Really appreciate all you assistance, etc. Sorry if I messed you up in any way.

That's the route I' going to try. I'm fortunate in having a friend who is much more puter knowledgeable than I who will assist so might not be too bad. Big decision now is w7-would like w7 but don't know if I want to spend all that on it. Decisions, decisions----We'll call it 'a learning experience'. Many thanks again for your offer, help etc.
