SMARTreport shows laptop hard drive to have bad sector. Am getting message on boot up that says "failure is imminent".

Have backup on the way with enclosure and have already backed up critical data to CD.

Laptop is currently running with the whole thing tilted back and an external keyboard and mouse being used as I cannot keyboard with unit in this tilted position.

All the replacement drives outside of HP Store ($$$)) are 2.5" and the specs on this one are as follows:
    319414-001
    40.0GB ATA-100 EIDE hard disk drive - 4,200 RPM, 3.5-inch form factor, 12.7mm height

Can these be adapted? I have seen something called an 2.5" to 3.5" adapter, but not sure about this.

And ideas? or any other workaround for "fixing" a bad sector???

Im not making any promises, I would call HP so you can blame them if they are wrong and you need to return it. No real workaround for bad sectors, especially if it says failure is imminent. You can try a complete scandisk, but I think your doing the right thing. Someone else may have more to add....

You can definately buy a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter. I recently purchased one from my local computer store. Bazza
