    Appreciated
Hey guys so heres the deal, my GFS laptop has broken and being the wonderful pc technician i am, i was asked to fix it for love not money

the laptop is an Acer Aspire 5920g running windows 7 homne premium

    Symptoms:

Laptop turns on for around 10 seconds then screen goes black however the backlight remains on and the HDD light flickers.

first thinking it mite be a windows error, i booted to UBCD and once again it went black, after 10 seconds, - same thing happens if im tinkering in BIOS setup.

then as the fan was running quite heavy assumed maybe a heating issue, so opened her up and cleaned and replaced thermal..... No luck :(

am currently on the process of trying a bios update to see if it was a bios issue. however being a phoenix bios and the whole problem with dos booting a .wph bios file has caused me a few problems and hasnt resulted successful

just wanted to get you opinions on it and see what you would suggest.

the laptop does have a radeon dedicated graphics card i believe (without researching model number i couldnt tell you the rest.

    any help would be appreciated

    thanks

    Billy

    Hi,
The machine has either ATI or Nvidia VGA, can you hook up an external and see if it has similar issue?? if it is similar then you can deffo say that it is the on board card and it may well be down to an heat issue where the solder has become cracked and not connecting properly, but if you are getting normal results with the external then I believe that there is either a bad cable connection or the inverterboard is on its way out, I would check cables first as I had a similar issue with an older machine where the cables were getting nicked in the hinges, I wasn't as customed to fixing machines back then and spent a lot of money on something that should of only cost me £3.25, replacing screens and inverterboards only to find that it was infact only the inverter power cable that needed replacing- cheap 2min job :cry

hey guys the card is a ATI HD 3470

have tried external display with it still producing the same results, it just seems weird to happen almost deff 10 seconds into this
    replacement. cards are expensive

i was wondering wether there was a chance of a bios issue, unfortunatly i cant find the cmos battery without a complete teardown

the cards are removable btw and i have checked solder with no obvious signs of it cracking

    hmmmm

well thanks for ya help so far guys

(excuse ne typos am on a netbook)

She hasn't by any chance updated any drivers for the card lately has she?? try rolling the card driver back or install the original back onto the system.
