baffling hadware problem

    My machine is a hand made box with an intel board running a 2.4 processor and 512 megs of ddram. 2 hard drives one a 40 and one a 20. the problem is once and a while my harddrives are not recognized. after i take the side off the case it will work fine. i cnnot find a pattern for this machine so i can't tell when the problem occurs. i have changed the ide cable and switched the order of the harddrives nothing helps. any ideas as to thee problem?

    Are they set as master/slave (with master as the last connection on the IDE)?
    Have you tried setting both to CS (cable select)?
