bak up

    If I want to back up a hard drive 300 GB to an external hard drive 500 GB, can I do it by using the software that comes with the ext drive as well as using an imaging program?
    I have bought nothing yet but want to know in advance in case of failure which is the easiest and better method.
    As it is a big project to restore the o.s and all programs in case of failure but I am unsure of the safety of imaging as opposed to just the usb/firewire external drive software.

    Hi Peter

    What External HDD do you have, as need to know what software it uses to answer the question of if its good enough, but I would generally urge you to use an imaging app like Acronis True Image or EASEUS ToDo (which is free).

    I prefer using apps like this for backing up as they offer a better recovery route to restoring your PC back to normal that most other backup routines.

    Is it possible to restore pc if failure with external hard drive and usb or fire wire BUT not use imaging?
    I understand imaging is better.

    There is an admitted problem with Acronis 10 and Windows 7 when the back up is taking 20 plus hours. They are trying to work it out but the patch is not helping everyone.
    Therefore, I would ask if there is a tried and tested program which works well with Windows 7!
