Baking an HP DV4 motherboard

I have an HP Pavilion DV4 laptop that will not turn on. After a short time the scroll lock and the caps lock blink constantly. I have read that the video chip likely is the culprit. I have also read that reflowing the solder around the chip fixes the problem. One way they have performed the reflow was to put the motherboard, with processor chip removed, into a 385 degree oven for 8 minutes.

Has anyone heard of this and/or performed the procedure?

 

I've done the oven baking on a few HP Laserjet printer engine boards over the years and it's worked. If your DV4 is out of warranty and you feel comfortable doing it, why not.

I have an HP Pavilion DV4 laptop. When you power on the system you get no video and after a little while the scroll lock and caps lock blink steadily.

I had read in several places that reflowing the motherboard fixes the problem. By reflowing your are trying to get the solder to flow and reattach itself where its supposed to by following the etchings on the board.

I removed the motherboard from the laptop and removed any paper or plastic labels on the motherboard. I removed the processor and heatsink. I placed the motherboard in a preheated 385(F) degree oven using standoffs to keep the motherboard suspended off of the oven grates. I "cooked" the motherboard for 9 minutes and then GENTLY removed the motherboard to let cool.

After the motherboard was cool (30 minutes), I reinstalled it into the laptop. The laptop worked perfectly after it was powered back on.

Yes, it does work and your oven is warmed and ready to make cookies.
