i dont really understand....mine is 605.4kbps (whatever that means) and is so much fast than the dial up i had. i understand that with cable (roadrunner?) that the speed is faster still, almost instant in fact, so how do you get faster than instant????? aloha everyone

  8. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

Nothing is instant, you can't go faster than the speed of light ;)

It depends on how much data you're transferring. If you're transferring a web page - say, it is a very small file. With 605kbps (Kilobit per second) which works out as an effective speed of 60kb/s (kiloBYTES per second) .... the average web page is about 40kb, so loading that entire page would take less than a second with your connection.

If you have a 1MBit connection (100kb/s aproximatley) then that is well under a second.

Gottheit here could potentially download a web page in about 0.01 seconds :D

This is the result I get. Don't know where it rates on the faster than light scale. 0.01seconds... Holy Toledo.

    • Total Data Transferred: 36635664 bits
    • Transfer Time: 19.23 seconds
    • Speed: 1904635.52 bps
    • Speed (Kbps): 1860.00 Kbps
    • Speed (Mbps): 1.82 Mbps

  11. Gottheit

    Gottheit General Logic

If you could, you'd end up (theoretically) going back in time and un-downloading (uploading?) the content...Which defeats the whole purpose. You want to shoot for 99.9999_% of light's velocity. That's a nice, cozy place to be. ;)

    That's cuz I rule.

    Re: Who has fastest dialup?!?

I used to have 1.5 with Cox Cable, but that is $59 here. My dialup is $5.95.

    You do the math.

Easier to apply one online survey check or two to stay connected.

Stinks tying up phone line though.

I am 19000 feet from DSL switch. They only extend 16000. And that is $26 per month.

    I live with it.

QUestion; how are Y'all running so very fast? Cable? Better?
I do not have option of DSL, cable, or phone line, so am using Clearwire, which is a wireless service, using similar-to-cell phone wavelengths and a modem that sits in my window. I am semisatisfied with the speed right up until I see what others are doing - then it feels like 56K on the end of a looong country line with a weak repeater. (a tip for 56K users = the best $20 you can spend is the twenty you stuff in your lineman's shirt pocket when you ask him to tweak the repeater and you wink at him - voice service will be loud on your phone, but your internet will fly, for what it is)
I just have to remind myself of when I was a kid = if you wanted info, you waited until the library was open, then prayed they had the book and it was on the shelf. If not, you were fairly well screwed = this keeps me from tapping my foot in frustration while pages come up.
