Which bare metal backup software for Win 7 would people here recommend for a newbie? I'm new to Win 7, and easily confused, so ease of operation is paramount. It will be used once a year to do a full-on bootable mirror copy of everything on the HDD. I had a previous XP Pro HDD go 'meltdown', and lost everything. I want to prevent another total loss. I don't care about free or paid...provided it's not rentware that requires yearly 'tribute'.

I've been using imaging software for years, Acronis originally, Macrium Reflect free version for the last few years. Once a year is useless - I image the system monthly and have restored the system numerous times without a single failure. However imaging software isn't suitable for backing up your personal files. There are endless offerings for this but whichever you choose you need to run it daily, or at least weekly to be sure you have backups of recent versions of your files. It only takes a minute or two.

Rethink this. I make images every 4 - 6 weeks of 4 Windows 7 computers. If you only do it once a year and the hard drive dies after 11 months, think of all the pictures, music, videos, programs, bookmarks, etc. that will be gone. It is worthwhile taking the time to do an image more than once a year.
