Barebones -- any universal definition?

I was wondering what the usual types of stuff are included in a Barebones machine? Is there a fairly universal definition of what comes with a Barebones unit?

 

they vary some . some come with a case ,processors ,board and ram others add more . just make sure if you get one that a cooling fan for the cpu is included. most are put together using middle of the road parts(not good and not bad but compatible) some of the higher priced ones will have above average motherboards(sli or crossfire capable) hope that helps.

 

Thanks. That does help. At this point I am starting to wonder if it would cost me more in the long run if I just get each and every component as money allows, and then put everything together. I wish there was something like a computer in a kit where you pick everything, the company sends it to you, with a video on how to assemble it all. May not be cost effective though anyway.

 

As a general rule, with companies such as TigerDirect, do you think a person could swap out or opt out for certain parts that would normally be included and still be cost effective? I realize there are porbably a lot of variables involved.
