I've tried a few but they either crash or produce crap jpgs with no quality control, so i figured someone might have used or know such a proggie.

Otherwise you can suggest some retails software i'm even willing to buy such a converter if its reliable and convenient.

    Hi

I posted this a while back as part of a guide on XNView, so with a small adjustment in the steps will batch convert BMP to JPEG, is an installer type application normally though very reliable, but grap this standalone zip file one XnView beta 1* http://www.majorgeeks.com/XnView__d4974.html as it can run of USB ( just unzip and copy the folder to your USB Pen and run ) or get the stable last current stable version from here, just download the ZIP file option.

*the beta is stable for me.

Just highlight either one or many images as highlighted below

    http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/8907/40446751ib5.jpg

Then right click any of the highlighted images and choose Batch Conversion ( or CTRL+U ) then in the image below you can specify an output directory for these images, say a temp internet/forum folder ( *best to do this to not overwrite the originals ) by clicking the [...] in the circled area or type in the same area the path to the folder if known.

Then once a destination folder is chosen or you can convert to same folder and not add a destination, click the Format dropdown and choose what format you wish to convert too.

The Transformations Tab allows you to add some extra options as resize, set DPI, and some cleanup and noise reduction settinsg to the batch convert BUT I would trial these settings on some test images in a seperate folder before using and commiting to doing these transformation on the originals.
