    hi all,

I know, ewww batch files, but i have a question

Is there a way to send a command to another PC on a network to execute a program.

    i.e. notepad file.txt

I highly doubt it, you would need some sort of listener program to run that would watch for a command using something suck as winsock, executing a program from one machine to another machine would be a huge security risk if it were built into windows, exluding a machine that is part of a domain and gets a command from that domain server.

Hmmm Im actually not sure specifically what you mean there...

When I am on my command line and I type "notepad file1.txt" it opens on my machine a file called file1.txt, either opening an existing one at that path or creating an empty one at that path... When you say you want to be able to type "notepad file1.txt" do you want to be able to view that file in notepad on your machine or do you want it to pop up on someone elses machine?

Ahhh my bad you did say... you want it to open on their machine....

hmmm... not sure off hand... Let me have a think and a prod around on the net.

There is a name for a piece of software that does this..

    It's a trojan ;)

I would very much recommend that you find a program that will do only what you specifically need it to. Otherwise you're making a nice security hole for yourself. It'd be like getting a gun and aiming it at a fridge to shoot the door open, attaching a bit of string to it and going to the sofa. When you yank the string, the gun goes off, opens the door and you get your beer. But, what if you're busy getting your beer, and someone else yanks the string?

X on Unix/Linux allows you to do just this and is incredibly useful. In terms of security it is very easy to have the X information transmitted through an SSH tunnel. You can determine which machines can execute programs on a server and where the display should be popped up.

Example: A huge powerful server may be in a controlled machine room with no monitor/keyboard accessible, so a standard workstation can run the application remotely on the server with the display transmitted via X to the workstation. It appears that the application is running on the local workstation but really only the display is on the workstation. Its a very useful technology.

Alas I remember when I had my workstations X server setup incorrectly and a friend was running applications like xsnow set to display on my box. I unlocked the screen and the background was snowing with a bunch of lemmings wondering around the screen and cockroaches hiding under the windows... nice... lol :)

But aside from the vague question BigR hasn't given us too much on the in's and out's of what is wanted...
