battery issues

I have an hp zv5000, 6 months old. My battery is screwed up, its says at full charge 100%, but if I unplug it for 5 minutes it dies. And I get a critical battery level warning at 98%. After the battery dies I plug it back in a run on ac and charge the battery, I figure it would take a couple of hours to charge up completely, nope after 20 minutes the meter reads full and the charging light indicator goes out. Do I need a new battery (dumb question)? I heard there is a way you can manually drain the battery completely by pushing a button on the battery itself, then charge it up completely?

my brother got an hp laptop...he finally got a new one after 3 years, but after it was about 1 year old, the battery drained in 16 seconds (I timed it)...by the time it said low battery, the system was shutting down...maybe its a common problem

 

Most products nowadays are built to last a couple days longer than the warranty. My suggestion next time, get the extented warranty. It will save you 100 bucks getting a new battery everytime it decides to die.

 

If your talking about the critical battery warning in xp you can manually set it to warn you and shutdown your computer at various battery levels it will only warn you if its set at 98%,so have you tried to manually set it,control panel/power options to a lower % ,off memory I think its warning 15% standby 5%,if its a battery warning from a hardware sensor from a source seperate of the OS I would concurr the battery is a dud
