Dell Inspiron E1505 only works with AC adapter. Battery not detected. I rarely used battery. How do I determine if I need a new battery without replacing battery?

If the battery is not detected, something else might be wrong. My battery can't hold a charge (I can't complain, it was purchased in 2001 so it needs to be replaced) but it is still detected. Maybe your charger is broken. If so, it would not attempt to charge a battery that needs replacing.

Unless you know someone with the same model that you can try the parts, it is next to impossible to guess if it is the battery or the charger.

Could be the the battery is no longer making good contact what may work is removing the battery and cleaning the contacts, a pencil eraser used gently usually does the job.
