I seem to have lost the system tray icon that shows whether I'm running on the battery, or AC, or charging.

I went into Control Panel/Power Options/Advanced and the "Always show icon on the taskbar" option is checked.

Also, on Taskbar Properties, under Customize next to Hide inactive buttons, I made sure On AC power is set to Always show.

It is one of the very few icons that I actually DO want in the tray!

How do I get it back?

    Thanks,

    Steve

Oh yeah, it's a Compaq Presario laptop with XP Home, SP2

I keep the AC power plug in my tray as well. You might go back into the control panel and try unchecking the box, click ok....then go in again and check the box in the hopes that will it will reappear in the tray for you. Other than that I can't advise further at the moment. Good luck.

    Thanks, I tried that though.

    Anything else?

So far I can't come up with any plausible explanation why it wont display. but I'll keep checking this thread to see if you or someone else comes up with the fix.

I had the same problem, also with a Compaq laptop. After trying everything you have, and checking compaq/hp for any power management drivers, I tried a repair install of XP. It bugged me so much not being able to see at a glance (or a click) the battery life left that I ended up formatting and re-installing XP. So far (2 months), it has stayed, although today when I used a friend's high-speed internet connection, it disappeared until the next reboot. If you find any permanent cure, post it -- I still don't know what cause it to disappear in the first place.

    if none of that works.

try looking on the compaq website to see if they have a custom power management program for that machine.
you can usually download them and install them

if not.. they usually have application recovery in the start menu under one of the compaq sub menu's
you can reinstall any of the apps that come with the machine.
you may need the cds that came with it if its fairly new.
i believe the cd is driver and application recovery.
as opposed to compaq operating system cd.
