Well, I just noticed my Beagle's anal gland is severely swollen!! Of course the first thing I do is get online and check out the symptoms. It appears that he has an anal gland problem. I was reading that the anal gland is normally the size of a kidney, and when it is full, or abscessed it could be swollen to the size of a grape or walnut. But his is like the size of a softball. I'm taking him to the vet in the morning, hopefully it isn't blocked, and will not require surgery. I have taken pictures, but they just don't do justice to the size

Good luck at the vet. Hopefully they can get it all sorted.

... and take my word for it that no pictures are necessary. In fact, just to be very clear...don't post them. ;)

My family has 30 or more Beagles at any given time. I don't know if I've heard of that before with an anal gland, but I know it happens (frightening frequently) with the reproductive organs of a female (trying to dodge the flagged words). I believe that dogs scoot their butts on the ground to clear out the gland you're talking about. Hopefully it's nothing major.

    Good luck!

Just wanted to thank you for NOT posting a picture.

But I do hope the beagle is all right. Usually very affectionate, mild mannered dogs, I've owned a few myself.

When you see your dog sliding his butt across the floor, it's time to express his anal gland. Have a paper towel ready!! LOL

Hi lego126, I am sure your Vet will have things under control, and that is pretty normal for dogs, no matter what the breed is. Some just more than others.

I know a few groomers that make that a part of their routine, is to 'express them' so they don't get infected. Trust your Vet with this... He/She is the expert in this field. ;) Ah, no pix are needed, really :p

well, i took him to the vet, and she gave me pain medicine and antibiotics. She tried to express the gland, but it was causing to much uncomfort and she said she'd prob, have to put him to sleep to express it. But after I woke up this morn. the gland had ruptured and is coming thru the skin. I called the vet, and they told me to keep it clean with peroxide and continue antibiotics, and pain meds, and to bring him back after the antibiotics are gone, and the swelling is gone down, and they would try to take care of it then. I read on the internet that it is common in smaller breed canines, and a ruptured/abscessed gland is not uncommon. Thnks for all the replies and concern about my beagle. ;) He's my baby.

Oh and one more thing, just so everyone can see him. These are not pics. of the problem just of him.

There is one before his $600 cherry eye surgery, and two others after the surgery.

Gorgeous looking beagle you have there. :)

The pics are adorable. I've never seen the eye thing.

Sounds like the vet (and you) are taking good care of your baby. :)

When I was a kid, I owned beagles for rabbit hunting. And if you own a beagle, you should really take it rabbit hunting. You don't have to shoot the rabbit, you can even just take a camera. I would take the dog rabbit "hunting" all months of the year, just for the fun of it.

You kick up a rabbit, and the beagle starts chasing. Visual at first, loud, fast yelps/howls. Then it becomes a scent chase, with long, slow baying.

Rabbits, like most animals, run in a circle when chased. You position yourself at the spot you first kicked it up, and listen to the baying, and wait. Pretty soon you'll see the rabbit returning, not at a run, but furtively hopping through the brush. The dog would usually be 50 to 100 feet behind, baying as it tracks.

As I said, I did this all year. The record for one of my beagles was a five lap chase before it lost the scent.

That is what beagles were born and love to do!

I actually use tater-tot for squirrels. Is is getting better at treeing them, but mostly is just on the ground. I also road hunt him, down here in TN. there are lots of long dirt back roads, and squirrels are notorious for crossing. So I take tater, open the door in the truck, he stays on the road runing about 3-5MPH, and I slowly follow, then when he smells one he darts off the side of the road, and I stop turn the truck off and listen. He has tracking collars and shocking collars, cause if not he'd never return. Thanks for all the kind words
    :cool
