Been a while but i need help!!!

Ok here is the situation, I posess an IBM Thinkpad 600 with a 5 GB hard drive, 130 MB of ram, a pentium 2 processor and windows ME. I checked all the hardware and the hardware is fine i think, but when booting up after logging in to ME, the desktop shows nothing but the background, no start menu, no desktop icons, no ability to right click or anything like that. I use CTRL ALT Delete and the only running program on the task manager is listed "Kb891711"

how do i remedy this situation???

Opinions seem to vary on the rememdy, but two seem to prevail. 1. Delete the program from the Add/Remove section of Control Panel, 2. Leave it installed, but disable it at startup from MSCONFIG. Hope this helps!

 

While you have the taskmanager open go to new. Type explorer.exe (might not need .exe). What happens? Does explorer start?

edit/ woops too late. should have refreshed the page first.

 

i wish i could use those solutions however the ctrl alt del doesn't alow me to start up new tasks because there is no button for it. and i have no acess to ms config because there is no ability to suummon up the start menu. its just a blank desktop background image with no ability to right click or left click. is there a back door??? remember its an ibm thinkpad 600 with a 5 gb hard drive a pentium 2 and 130 mb of ram.

 

I should also mention that the same thing happens in safe mode, a blank desktop image with safe mode in the 4 corners, but no icons to click on, no start menu or button to click on or bring up, just the image. i click ctrl alt del and no programs are running. i'm trying to find a way to access dos to see if i get anywhere outside the os. if there is dos outside the os....

 

You can us a ME bootdisk if you have one, or download one here http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm . When this has finished loading, you should have access to your C: drive. The KB891711 file should be located in C:\Windows\System. You should be able to rename it or change the extension to something other than exe.

 

will burning that program to a cd work instead of a floppy???

You should see an ISO file for your operating system. Download the file and use the image burning feature of your software to make the CD.
