Beginner question

My monitor screen has suddenly developed a 1 cm black border all around it.
(Though on left side it's 1 1/2 cm). Is this just an indication that the monitor itself is old, or a software problem?

 

Try using the settings buttons on the front of the monitor. Usually they are located around the power button itself.

There should be either a menu button that will scroll through different options or individual buttons that will handle the different functions of adjusting the screen settings/location.

Most monitors have menu options or buttons that will fix the vertical and horizontal positioning of the screen, along with individual options of stretching or shrinking the image on the screen to properly fit within the frame of the monitor. There are usually some other options also, but if this is your issue, the two I just described above, are the ones you need to be concerned with for fixing your problem!!

Thanks Roger, this more or less fixed the problem, but there is more that was masked by it. My desktop had many icons, which now cannot all be viewed......it is as if each one is taking up slightly more space. And the print in Yahoo mail is bigger....I have had to shrink it. I can't help but feel that there is a larger aspect to it all, and expanding the picture just corrected part of it. It seems a bit odd.

 

A friend showed me how to change the desktop settings and all is well.
Seems odd the the system decided to do this all by itself, though !
