I've upgraded my Compaq DeskPro (733 320 ram) from Win 98SE to Windows 2000 SP2 (retail). A month ago I successfully loaded SP3 and today ran Belarc Advisor for the first time. It told me that I was missing 49 Microsoft Security Updates. I then downloaded SP 4 and reran Belarc...Now it tells me that it's missing 67 updates! While Belarc is very good about listing each and every hotfix, do I need to do this 67 times

    Welcome to MG, WesternMA.

I hope Belarc_Guy is lurking around this forum. I am sure he can provide an answer.
I was going to guess at an answer, but will leave it to Belarc_Guy, I think. Bazza

BA is known to be late with its Windows updates. The rest is fine. Check in a day or two.

    Hey peterr...

Talk about late with its updates lol. I see you didn't notice the date on the original posts. Hope he's not still waiting after 8 years...:-D

As they say, you never know who is watching the WWW and may benefit from information. ;)

Since you've unearthed this old thread peter, Belarc does not update Windows or anything else. Secunia PSI does that. Belarc only reports your present status.

My Belarc shows updates on the bottom; they eventually catch up but are notoriously slow.

Versions of the Belarc Advisor automatically check for, fetch, and install Belarc Advisor Security Definition updates at each use. We recommend that you get the latest version of the Advisor from and it will easily keep you up to date. The currently released Belarc Advisor Security Definition updates include all Microsoft security bulletins through July 08 2014. This update ensures that the System Security Status panel in the computer profile report reflects the true number of missing Microsoft Security Updates.

It doesn't update anything other than the definition files it uses to tell you how up-to-date or otherwise you are.

I included this as the comment was made that it did not update anything.>>Belarc does not update Windows or anything else.>

I used to use Belarc but now use Speccy as it monitors the heat on my laptop and also gives some machine information.

    I too use Secunia.

Sorry peter, had to post that in a hurry as I had an appointment to keep. Let me explain a little more. If you want Windows and all of your installed software automatically updated then you need (a) to keep automatic updates on and (b) install Secunia PSI or a similar program. When using an auto-updater such as Secunia it's best to turn off any auto-update features in your installed software. Belarc on the other hand provides you with masses of useful information about your computer and software but does not itself update anything. Any 'slowness' you may have been discussing with others will be simply a function of when their software gets updated by other means.

Belarc assess your information including hotfixes and critical updates but at times is slow to do so[bottom of its page].
Secunia points out programs needing updating.
    Windows automatically updates your system.
Speccy shows temperatures and other stats.
Generally speaking, we are in agreement?

When I run Belarc, which is only occasionally, it asks for permission to update its database, see pic. So the definitions are up-to-date every time I run it unless I decline.

Secunia not only states which programs need updates but also updates them, or at least tries to. Sometimes though you have to do it manually.

Windows will update itself automatically providing that is the option you have chosen, but there are several other options, see pic

    Speccy OK
