Recently stumbled onto a solution for a problem I had with my XP Pro sp3. The sound had quit (known issues with onboard Realtek HD).:duck Before, when that had happened, I eventually had always had to format and reinstall. This time, having a new hard drive available, I installed XP on it first.

My Gigabyte X48 allows choosing the boot HD, so after disconnecting EVERYTHING I could, I plugged in the new HD, loaded XP, and booted up. After talking to MS on the phone, it was verified. I loaded up all the goodies we have all come to know and love, but left off my Word 2000, Omnipage, Roxio, ETC. Got it working like I wanted and then plugged in all my other HDs, including the one with the original XP on it. Amazingly, after booting up each different XP a couple of times- the sound problem had fixed itself! :-D I use the new XP just for games and internet; it is on a Rapter.

But just in the last few days, the one XP works just fine with standby, but the old XP comes out of standby with a BSOD ( x07e). :cry This would indicate that it is not a BIOS problem. I am afraid it might be the HAL. I have copied acpi stuff from the good to the bad XP but it didn't do anything at all- but I'm actually worried about trying to do that with the HAL files.

I could use some advice from someone that's somewhat hi-tech!:wave
