    Hi there,

I have bought a pc which only support agp8x, im not to bothered about not having pci-e cuz i got the pc pretty cheap, and im only a casual gamer.
I want to buy the best agp8x there is.

    My spec:

    P4 3ghz HT /800fsb
    1g of 2700 ram
    40 gig SATA 7,200rpm
    48xCD
    16DVD

    Paid £70

Ive read that the 7800gs+ is the fastest agp card, is this true?
Ive been out of the loop for a few years and im finding a lot of contradicting
    opinions.
Although im not HC gamer id still like the best just cuz they are cheap to get so why not.

    Thanks for your time folks.

Pretty slim choices with AGP, at least for new ones. PowerColor, HIS, and Sapphire all make an ATI HD3850 AGP card which is a pretty rockin' card. Here's some HD3850's available at Newegg:

    No.
It may have been the fastest right when came it out, but that was a few years ago.

You can also check EBay for Geforce 6800, Radeon 1900 or 1950, and Geforce 7800 and 7900 and 7950. I had an AGP Radeon 1950 and it rocked! It played everything I threw at it without problems....

Looking at your specs, I'm thinking a bigger hard drive is a good idea, and maybe a 2nd gig of memory, and a DVD burner is always nice too ;)

Guys im sorry but the situation has changed.

Ive had the pc a few days and ive just loaded up 3dmark03 and it says
i only have agp4x. Ive been looking through the bios and sysinfo and couldnt find anything about 8x but couldnt find anything about 4x either so i just assumed the advert on ebay would be right.

Ive sent the seller a message asking them for a full refund or a swap with a comp that is pci-e enabled (what i shoulda bought in the first place) and ive told them im happy to pay the differece ect, best to keep em sweet i suppose.

    Anyways,

    Thanks for you time guys

Sorry to dig up this thread again but it turns out i do have a 8x agp socket.

Im gonna get 2gigs of 3200 ram and a 500w psu.

    Would my system take a X1950pro 512mb?
Or am i getting into the realms of fantasy?
Maybe a HD3850 would be better.

Ive just read an article telling me that p4 HTs are a bag of s***e for gaming,
    I knew i shoulda bought a Wii....

The system will take the X1950pro, but the 3850 is better. HTP4 is not :crap for gaming. Compared to todays modern quads it is, but it can hold it's own and should provide decent peformance. However: if you're going to doing some serious gaming, you should really just buy new updated modern gear instead of flushing more money down the old PC pipe. For the amount of money you'll spend on a high end AGP card and extra DDR333/400 memory, you'd be better off saving for 2 more months and getting some new gear. I was in your same shoes back in March. I had the x1950 AGP 256mb Radeon video card, 1.5gb DDR400 RAM, a s754 CPU and I realized that I was maxed. I couldn't do any better on that platform. Sure, I could have gone to 3gb DDR2, or saved up for the best AGP card at the time, but I'd still have out of date gear. So I lived with it for a month or two, put in extra hours at work, and bought a motherboard and 3gb DDR2 RAM with one paycheck, a new PCIX video card with the next paycheck, and the CPU with the next paycheck. I then sold all my old gear and bought two 320gb SATA2 hard drives with the proceeds. Then a month later I got a 21" wide screen LCD. And now, because of my patience, and hard work, my PC rocks.

Good luck (I hope my little story has a point, and that it didn't bore everyone too much ;) )

Not boring at all, your making perfect sense.

I bought the pc 3 weeks ago, didnt do enough research.
I think i'll probably get what i paid for it (£70+£15 delivery) if i sold it
    in the local paper.
Then ill just buy a tower that has a good core and that is upgradeable.

Thanks for your time buddy, i appreciate it greatly.:)
