    Hello:

What are the best anti-virus choices out there? And why?
Recently I have finally uninstalled NIS and my system is like new.
So I have AVG installed, as well as Spybot, Ad-Aware, Spyware Blaster, and Reg Seeker.

System: Win ME, 256MB Ram, 12GB HD, 600MHZ AMD

My concern is that I don't want anything taking up so much resources if I decide to pick another virus protection.

    Everyone's thoughts?

    Thanks

The one you have there is the best in my opinion and the one i use. avg is light weight when it comes to using up the system's resources, effective, and has all the NAV features for free. I love it.

I used to use Mcaffee because it came with my computer, but after reading someones rant about how it sucks, I tried Avast. With the initial quick scan it found 6  trojans that Mcaffe never picked up, and with a thorough scan it found 4 more and some malware that Pest Patrol missed. Needless to say, I immediately cancelled my Mcaffee subscription.

    Hi techiegirl2:

Its a good idea to regularily scan with 2 antivirus programs.
Often one will get something the other misses.
Do NOT allow more than one anti-virus programs to run in background as resident.

AntiVir is the one I have come to rely on and IMO is the best of the free ones.
I use it manually only as it never seems to shut up in background.

My other anti-virus program is AVG (the one you already have)
    I use it as resident/background.

BTW, only the program running background will use system resources when not manually scanning.

I run either any time they update their databases or when I suspect something ... or notice odd system behaviour.

Both of these programs allow a r-click on a drive, folder or file for a quick specific scan.

I use this as my browser home page:

Any upgrades/udates for the above and those other programs mentioned in your post will turn up there.

    Happy trailz,

Avast or AVG as mentioned, free and both really good. I use Avast free, but I have 768MB of RAM.

As you have AVG installed I would stick with that one if it was me, and I had 256MB RAM.

There may be others I'm not familiar with, but somebody here probably would be.

Techniegirl you should add more RAM to your system... if you're on an older system, and it looks like you are, SDRAM is pretty cheap... and installing it is as easy as opening up your PC case, and just inserting the RAM stick into it's proper slot... u should look into it, i think you'd notice a world of difference

Been there done it, try it...but here is the fun part. My case doesn't allow it.
When I try and install the extra ram into the slot, my CD burner would have to stick out.
Bad case choice from the dealer...but what can I do.
