My current (non-freeware) Anti-Virus Program will be expiring soon. I was wondering if it was best to shell out another $29.95 for another year, or are the freeware Anti-Virus programs good enough?

Among the freeware anti-virus programs which is the best, AntiVir, AVG, Avast or Comodo?

    Thanks.

Hey there all good if you ask the right person, I think right now AVG is the hot choice, just remember to run one only. The exception is Windows Defender Beta 2 which will run along with other antivirus's, and is free from the MS site, just type Windows Defender in search. AVG & Windows Defender is my combo.
SIDE NOTE:- use CCleaner from MG to remove all of your "Old" antivirus, before installing any new antivirus, will save you alot of possible headaches later

Thanks a lot BCGray. Sounds like you know your stuff. Will go look for Windows Defender and CCleaner and see how it all works out. If I can't find them I will be back here asking for links :D

Just to be contrary, Zone Alarm Free and Avast are my combination. Also available via Halo's link earlier. Bazza

Vista my friend.. Avast free worked in the last build, just havnt gotten around to installing in in this one. IE7 and Vista is much different in how it deals with or the level of access it gives the temp internet directory, alot of malware installs via the temp dir, in Vista the temp dir has low access rights to the core OS, it needs the user to physically click at least 3 alerts to allow access, you click past the three and you deserve to be infected ;)

Thanks for all the help. Should have posted here earlier. Decided to go the freebie route and am now running with Avast Free Edition and Comodo's Firewall. No problems so far. Although I did have a problem booting up the first two times after installing Comodo. But a registry sweep seems to have taken care of that.
