Not only has sexyandy81 made a valid point, but referring to any one specific anti-virus program as the "best" is a somewhat misleading statement. The fact is... no AV software will catch everything. However, there is one that I've noted on more than one occasion .. catching malware, spyware, and other malicious scripts that no other competitor did. Unfortunately, this particular AV program is only available as a trial version for 30 days at which time I belive it's $40 for annual service. The software I'm refering to IS....

    MALWAREBYTES!

It's a beast, for real. But in the case you must opt for any available freeware AV versions, I would almost say it's an 'eenie meanie miney moe" type of selection. The only advice I can offer in regards to free AV software is to try and find one that utilizes a cloud based service. Rather than occasionally checking for updated virus definitions from the company's databases, cloud based anti-virus is updated in real-time. This is what you want to look for.

Malwarebytes is now an AV Product as well as malware removal but the detections are very low in tests being done, But you can download a free AV Program to go along with Malwarebytes but you must be careful as some of them cause conflicts between the programs.

Use Windows 10 Defender as your av program rather than installing a 3rd party.
Install Malwarebytes which has 4 tools: web protection, exploit protection, malware protection and ransomware protection.

I found out that Windows defender in windows 10 will take up to much of your cpu.Unless they fixed the problem, from what i remember about defender. Is it continuously run's in the back round.Sucks up resources all most all the time.like i said unless they fixed that problem.

When you would try to play a game or what ever.It would take up to 50% of your cpu.
