I have a license for NOD32, and Kaspersky. I currently use NOD32 at the moment, and you cannot go wrong with it. Great detection, and incredibly low footprint. You wont know its there. Kaspersky slows things down a little more, but i dont think anything could ever get past it ;)

go here: http://www.av-comparatives.org for more information on detection rates. Be sure to read the reports instead of just looking at the tables.

I don't recall having experience with Avast, but I will chip in that AVG is plenty good; I use it on all pre-Win2k machines that I work with.

Avast works well for me as a free AV, as mentioned NOD32 is one of best paid for AVs, but in all honesty best AV is YOU.

Avast is pretty light on resources and updates on a regular basis, has had its issues at times with false positives, but seems AVG is taking that crown at present.

Why I say YOU, well its the user who generally is the one responsible for majority of infections in where you surf ( non safe sites ) and in what you download ( as in software from strange download sites or software off p2p or warez sites ), if you safe surf and are careful in what you download its likely you will not come into contact with malware much if at all, not easy I know to always know what sites are safe but if a site has Photoshop CS3 for download free its kinda likely that it may come with something extra!!!

But core set of security apps is very advisable in prevention for that time in which you will come into contact with malware, hopefully your AV will pick it up before it installs.

Another vote for Avast from me. :major
I used AVG for quite a while, but switched to Avast and have used it for ages now. :)
No problems and I haven't had any false positives, I think. ;) Bazza

I personally like NOD32, but then it's just my opinion.

Just to add my two cents: I use AntiVir, Arovax Shield, and Comodo's BOClean and firewall.... that's for active, real-time protection. I have others that I use for additional weekly scans (a-squared, SUPERAntispy, etc...)

According to the latest PCPro magazine (dated September 2007) it gives Kaspersky AV7 as the best paid for version and Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic as the best free option with detection rates of 98% and 92% respectively.

AVG Free got a 83% detection rate and Avast 70%.

Thanks Yargwel, for that info. I've been very happy with Avast but always willing to give a better rated program a try. ;)

I had been using Avast too but now I'm giving Antivir a try. Apart from the occasional nag to update to its premium version it seems OK.

And yes the Spetember edition is out already. It's good to know what's happening in the future. :D;)

Sounds like you may still be undecided ?

So, I may as well cast another vote for Avast
    It's free
    It works
It has never caused me any problems

    Good luck
