hey mate im in the process of looking for the best anti-spyware programme myself however the cost limits me to freeware versions , the only advice i can give as i speak from a bad experience i would make sure that you use a good if not two on demand scanners and make sure whichever anti-apyware programme you use/purchase its a must that it has real time live protection,im not sure but id say some of the programmes you pay for include both these features....

if you fell like going the freeware route id just make sure you get 1/2 on demand programmes which remove any malware etc ,
and , get a programme which stops malware from getting on to your computer

a good example of two on demand scanners are
ad-aware(availble on mg in link below )

spybot search and destroy (availble in link below)

an example of a live scanner would be
    spyware blaster

From what I understand Spysweeper (which I have and am very happy with) and Syware Doctor are 2 of the best antispyware programs, though I'm sure there are other good ones. Both cost money, but are reasonably priced.

If you don't mind spending a little money, SpySweeper is probably the best. For freeware, I'd recommend either Spyware Terminator: http://majorgeeks.com/Spyware_Terminator_d5242.html or SpyCatcher Express: http://www.tenebril.com/consumer/spyware/spycatcher-express.php
I've used them both and they both do a great job! Check 'em out! As for Spyware Blaster, it's a great program, but it works a bit differently than the two programs mentioned above. It provides a different type of real-time protection and can be used alongside either of the two programs above. It doesn't scan for or remove spyware; check out the link posted above by ferg46 for a better description of Spyware Blaster.

Don't run two active scanners at the same time. Couple reason, first being that its gonna cause conflicts between the two scanners, also will cause speed issues. Same reasons people are told not to run two firewalls or anti virus at the same time. Now keep in mind i said "active scanners" Its fine to have multiple scanners that only scan when you request it, but not active scanners that stay in memory, for those you must pick one. Also you should read the http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44525 how to protect yourself from malware thread.
