Anyone have recommendatons which antivirus might be best for 2006 for XP?

I've used Norton Internet Security the last few years---seems to work, but slowly and I wonder if other programs are better??

I'm probably one of the few who continue with Symantec products. Started with NAV only long ago, tried SystemWorks which I found to be a resource pig, and have now settled on Norton Internet Security 2005.

    I'm totally with Herr Garrick:

    AVG

    Avast

    The field nowhere.

I have used, and really like, AVG. Howevr, I have Trend Micro's PC-cillin Internet Security installed on my personal PC. It is AV/FW. After the initial cost it costs only 25.00 per year to renew. Just my preference.

    Lance and Herr,

Why do you run 2 anti-virus programs, instead of one good one? All the major players in the field have good products. I must admit that I'm not real familiar with the freebie's except that I've received email from other folks who use AVG.

For me making a choice between all of the available anti-virus programs was a hassle, so I stick with the product I know and haven't been let down yet. The only thing I don't like about Symantec is tech support is located someplace offshore or maybe onshore, in a country where English is a second language that isn't spoken very well. If you've ever called any of the big company tech support depts. you know what I'm talking about.

They don't run two, thats a big nono. They just reccomend two, of either people can choose :)

So which is better at updating it definitions and is certified ICSA, AVG or AVAST. Also which runs on less resources?

Avast frequently updates automatically and it's free. The only thing I can see as a problem with it, is there is a compatibility issue with The ZoneAlarm firewall. Supposedly they're working hand in hand to resolve it. My guess is, it works fine with the MS firewall and others.

Yes, there are better antivirus suites then norton as in the upcoming Kaspersky Suite(2006) whicih is still in beta testing. But if you like norton you should continue too use it.

Yeah, there tech support is horrible..$30 for an incident  ..Otherwise Norton antivirus is good ;)

    Probably Avast on both.

    Best? Norton A/V.
    Best without inane pricing? Trend/Micro
Best for multiple machines? F-Prot ($50 for ten machine licenses)
Best Free? Dunno, don't use free A/V software

Just my humble opinion. I've been using F-Prot exclusively for a few years, because I finally got fed up with the highway robbery that is known as Symantec.

The best antivirus isnt Norton, but it is up there. I would have too say either NOD32 or Kaspersky is the topier antivirus on the market.

It seems TrendMicro Internet Security is $49.95 on there homepage...As there is cheaper antiviruses that are also good ex; Dr.Web, BitDefender(standard & pro), F-Prot etc...

Dont know much for multiple machines..

The best free would either be between Avast or AntiVir

There seems to be some general agreement, but no specific first choices---

I may try Avast or AVG----should I expect either of these to be my only AV program??

I also use counterspy for spyware----

And then I have recently turned on the Microsoft Firewall on my XP system.

The XP firewall isnt good enough, I recommend ZoneAlarm Free Edition for a firewall. I use AVG AntiVirus, ZoneAlarm & Spy Sweeper. Never had any problems.

Run only one resident AV program, no others should be installed on your HHD.

Ditch the Windows Firewall, it isn't a true bidirectional firewall. Install a true firewall; there are some good free ones list in this thread How to Protect yourself from malware!.
