Well guys it has come to my attention that my Norton Antivirus program is coming up for renewal. I was wondering on your opinion of Antivirus programs. What is the best antivirus program out there?

I ask because Norton is a bit of a pain to work with and i just can't help but think there is something better out there.

For a free antivirus AVG is pretty good. I've used Norton myself but got rid of it due to it being a resource hog. I know use NOD32. Has a free trial, try it out. NOD32 has done extremely well in all independant tests, but no one antvirus will pick up everything that is out there. It is also light on resources, has a great email scanner, updates often. Can be found at http://www.nod32.com/. Have tried many antivirus softwares, but now have gone to NOD32 on a permanent basis.

Personally, I use Antivir (http://www.majorgeeks.com/AntiVir_Personal_Edition_d955.html). It seems fairly resource light, is fairly highly rated, and it creates an umbrella icon in your startbar, which folds up when it is disabled, which I think is just adorable.:)

Really, there are plenty of options out there, and while some may be better than others at certain tasks, most of them will protect you just fine. Just remember to get a firewall also if your Norton program has a firewall included, and to keep your data backed up and perform general safe computing procedures.

That said, I'm sure a few of the more knowledgable people than me can give you more specialized advice.

As was noted, all people will have different opinions! Of the freeware antivirus apps available on Major Geeks, most members seem to favor Avast and AVG.:)

Ditto. I use AVG now, and not only is it lighter on my system than Norton, but it also picked up 21 trojans and 7 viruses that were brooding on my system that Norton missed. Right now, I think I'll stay with AVG, cos there's no way I can afford a paid AV.

Not that you need anymore advice, but I feel AVG to be the best free AV. However, for some unexplainable reason, I use, and like. Trend Micro's PC-cillin Security. A combination of firewall/AV But that's just me.
