Just installed AVG 8 yet it slowed down Firefox so I uninstalled it. Looking for recommendations for a good replacement. Have been considering Avast or Avira, all sugestions welcomed. Thanks in advance.

I used Avast for ages, but swopped to Avira recently as it was reviewed as the best FREE one available.

But 2 things against Avira, IMO.

    1. You can't kill the Process (avguard.exe) using Process Explorer.
    2. avguard.exe uses 68,532K on my system, and you can't get rid of it (see 1. above).

NB: Latest version of Avast, you can't kill the processes either. :cry

I like to kill all unneccesary processes when I am NOT on the Net, but that's just me. :-D

From what I reading as people test the two, Avast seems to be preferred because it doesn't slow down the computer's performance like AntiVir.
Note: I have both waiting in the wings (on desktops of two computers) to test when I finally remove AVG 7.5

I do computer builds for charity and utilize/test freeware quite a bit, to keep things legal. In the antivirus area, I rely on AV-Comparatives.org to do the testing and it has never done me wrong. I am less concerned by speed than how well my drive is protected. I can always scan while I have dinner.

Avira slightly edges out Avast! and AVG trails behind a ways, though it has been closing the gap, recently. I've used Avira on our two machines and installed it on the charity machines for the last five years with great success. Nothing seems to get through.

There is a nag/splash screen with avira, but it can be shut off by altering the permissions of the file avnotify.exe

Avast! is a decent choice, too. I just use the one that tops the free list.
